BOND TYPES FOR ROOFERS
CONTRACTOR LICENSE BOND
Required by most states to obtain or renew your roofing contractor license. Guarantees you will comply with state licensing laws and regulations. Protects consumers if you violate the licensing code.
PERFORMANCE BOND
Required on specific contracts — typically commercial, government, or large residential projects. Guarantees to the project owner that you will complete the project according to the contract terms.
PAYMENT BOND
Often paired with a performance bond. Guarantees that you will pay your subcontractors, material suppliers, and laborers. Protects the property owner from mechanic lien claims arising from your failure to pay.
BID BOND
Submitted with a contract bid. Guarantees that if you are awarded the contract, you will enter into the contract at the bid price and provide the required performance and payment bonds.
PERMIT BOND / COMPLETION BOND
Some municipalities require a bond when pulling permits for large roofing projects. Guarantees the work will be completed to code.
HOW BONDING WORKS
A surety bond involves three parties: you (the principal), the party requiring the bond (the obligee — your state licensing board or the project owner), and the bonding company (the surety).
The surety is essentially co-signing for your good behavior. If you fail to fulfill your obligations — fail to complete a project, violate licensing law, fail to pay subcontractors — the surety pays the claim. Then the surety comes after you for reimbursement.
This is why bonds are underwritten based on your creditworthiness and financial stability. The surety is taking on risk on your behalf and needs confidence you can back them up.

SURETY BOND FAQ
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SURETY BOND AND INSURANCE?
Insurance protects you from losses. A surety bond is a three-party guarantee: the surety (bond company) guarantees to the obligee (the party requiring the bond) that you (the principal) will fulfill your obligations. If you default, the surety pays — but then comes back to you for reimbursement. It is a credit instrument, not a loss transfer.
HOW MUCH DOES A ROOFING CONTRACTOR LICENSE BOND COST?
License bond premiums are typically 1-3% of the bond amount per year, depending on your credit score and financial history. A $10,000 bond might cost $100-$300/year. Performance bonds on specific projects are priced differently — usually 1-3% of the contract value.
CAN I GET BONDED WITH BAD CREDIT?
Yes, though you will pay a higher premium. Surety underwriters look at personal credit, business financial statements, and character. Low-credit bonds are available but may require higher premiums (5-15% of bond amount) and additional collateral. Do not let credit history stop you from getting bonded.
IS A LICENSE BOND REQUIRED TO GET A ROOFING CONTRACTOR LICENSE?
In most states, yes. The required bond amount varies by state — from as low as $5,000 to $50,000 or more. In California, roofing contractors need a $25,000 CSLB contractor license bond. Florida requires a $20,000 bond for licensed roofing contractors. We know each state requirement.
WHAT IS A PERFORMANCE BOND AND WHEN DO I NEED ONE?
A performance bond guarantees to the project owner that you will complete the contract according to its terms. If you default, the surety steps in to complete the project or compensate the owner. Performance bonds are common on commercial roofing jobs, government contracts, and large institutional projects.
HOW FAST CAN YOU ISSUE A BOND?
License bonds for amounts under $25,000 with good credit can often be issued same day. Larger bonds and performance bonds require more underwriting — typically 2-5 business days. If you have an urgent bid deadline, call us directly and we will prioritize.
